Commission-free ordering for takeaways: is it worth it?

Updated 1 October 2026 · 4 minute read

Paying 14% to 30% on every order makes direct ordering tempting. It can work well, but 'commission-free' doesn't mean free, and it rarely replaces the apps completely.

Short answer: Commission-free ordering means customers order from your own website or app, so no delivery platform takes a percentage. You still pay for the ordering system, card payments and, if you deliver, drivers. It works best for regulars who already know you, while the apps keep bringing in new customers.

What it saves

On a £20 order, Uber Eats' published fee when it delivers is 30% plus VAT, or £7.20. Even at 13% for self-delivery it's £3.12. Every regular who orders direct instead keeps that money in your business. Use our calculator to see what moving some orders direct would save you.

What it still costs

  • The ordering system: usually a monthly fee or a small per-order charge.
  • Card payments: a processing fee on each order.
  • Delivery: your own drivers, or a per-delivery service. Uber Direct, for example, charges per delivery for orders taken on your own website or app.
  • Marketing: customers won't find your direct ordering by accident. You have to tell them.

Where it works best

  • Regular customers who already order from you on the apps.
  • Collection orders, where there's no delivery cost at all.
  • Local customers who find you on Google Maps, where your own website link sits on your Google profile.

Is there a Just Eat alternative for takeaways?

Yes, in two senses. Deliveroo and Uber Eats are the other marketplaces, with different fees and ranking rules (see our comparison). And commission-free ordering systems let regulars order from your own website or app instead. Most takeaways do best using a marketplace for new customers and their own ordering for regulars.

Keep the apps for new customers

The apps are where new customers find you. The usual approach is to use them for discovery and move regulars direct over time, for example with a leaflet in the bag that offers a reason to order direct next time. Check your app agreements first for any rules about promoting other ordering channels.

Get the app listings right too

Whatever you do direct, most new customers will still meet you on an app first. A strong listing there is what turns them into regulars. Get a free diagnostic of your listing.
