How to rank higher on Just Eat

Updated 25 September 2026 · 5 minute read

Where you appear on Just Eat decides how many customers even see your menu. Just Eat publishes the factors behind its default "best match" order. Here's what they are and what you can actually do about each one.

Short answer: Just Eat's default order is shaped by distance, how well you turn new customers into repeat customers, and operational performance (order volume, reorder rates, successful orders and accuracy). You can't change your distance, but you can win more repeat orders and get more orders right.

What Just Eat says decides your position

Just Eat's help centre lists the organic factors behind its default "best match" sorting:

  • Distance. Businesses closer to the customer's delivery address are prioritised.
  • New customer retention. Businesses that turn new customers into repeat customers rank higher.
  • Operational performance. Order volume, reorder rates, successful orders and accuracy.
  • Personalisation. Logged-in customers see results shaped by their own order history.

It also says up to 20 new businesses temporarily get an improved position, so a new listing has a short window to make a good first impression.

1. Make the first order good enough to repeat

Because repeat orders from new customers count, the first order matters more than anything. Common reasons customers don't come back include food arriving cold, missing items and portions that feel poor value (see the evidence). Check your packaging, your prep times and your busiest items first.

2. Get orders right, every time

Accuracy and successful orders are named directly. A simple two-step check before a bag leaves (one person packs against the ticket, another checks the bag) is the cheapest ranking improvement most kitchens can make.

3. Stay online and stay reliable

Orders you reject, or times you go offline during busy periods, can cost you successful orders and volume. If you regularly get overwhelmed, it's better to lengthen your prep time than to reject orders.

4. Make the menu easy to order from

More completed orders help your volume. Put your best sellers in the first category, cut near-duplicate items, and make sure your most popular dishes have a photo and a description that says what's in them.

5. Give people a reason to come back

Since repeat customers rank you higher, a clear reason to reorder helps: a signature dish people can't get elsewhere, a meal deal that's easy to understand, or a note in the bag.

What you can't control

Distance and personalisation are out of your hands. That's why two customers on the same street can see a different list. Focus on the factors you can change: repeat orders, accuracy and reliability.
